More than 1,000 people, including BNP-Jamaat-Shibir men, have been arrested in several districts and the capital city as the law enforcers launched a weeklong countrywide anti-militant combing operation on Friday.
Apart from the capital, the arrests were reported from Chittagong, Feni, Rajshahi, Natore, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Satkhira, Jessore, Narail, Brahmanbaria, Netrakona, and Joypurhat.
In the capital, police arrested 177 people in the crackdown on the militants launched in the wake of recent secret killings, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Additional Commissioner Devdas Bhattacharya of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) said police arrested 135 from different parts of the district and 135 more from Chittagong city while another Jamaat-Shibir men was arrested from Banshkhali area.
Most of the arrestees were fugitive accused, the AC added.
In Feni, police arrested 31people including a BNP man and and three Jamaat men from several parts of the district as part of the weeklong combing operation.
According to the district police control room, most of the arrestees are accused of several cases of murder, robbery and other accusation.
In Rajshahi, police arrested 34, said police spokesman and assistant commissioner of Rajpara thana Zone Iftekhar Alam.
Among the arrestees, 15 are accused in regular cases. Another 16 are either drug peddlers or addicts.
In Natore, police conducted several drives and arrested 27 people and also seized 40 motor cycles, said Additional Superintendent of Natore police Munshi Shahbuddin.
In Dinajpur, district police superintendent office said 100 people including two Shibir activists were arrested from 13 upazilas of the district in a joint drive of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
In Rangpur, at least 90 people were arrested accused in several cases, said Rangpur additional police superintendent Abdullah Al-Faruque.
In Satkhira, police arrested 35 people, including two Jamaat men, in several drives from Thursday night to Friday morning.
In Jessore, 68 people were arrested in several drives in eight upazilas of the district as part of the countrywide operation to curb militancy.
In Narail, 47 people, including two Jamaat leaders were arrested in separate drives from different parts of the district since Thursday, said police superintendant Sardar Rakibul Islam.
In Brahmanbaria, a total of 31 people including local BNP and Jamaat men were arrested in the district.
In Netrakona, police arrested eight Jamaat men including three uapzila level Amir of the party in the district. District police superintendent Joydeb Chowdhury said the arrested are accused in several cases.
In Joypurhat, at least 39 people were arrested from different villages of the district.
Besides, 171 people were arrested in Sylhet, 68 people were arrested in Tangail, 57 arrested in Kushtia, 31 people in Brahmanbaria, 27 in Jhenidah, 26 in Panchagargh, and 24 in Sherpur and Magura respectively in separate drives.
